Synopsis

Marungka Tjalatjunu (Dipped in Black) follows Yankunytjatjara man Derik Lynch's road trip back to Country for spiritual healing, as memories from his childhood return. A journey from the oppression of white city life in Adelaide, back home to his remote Anangu Community (Aputula) to perform on sacred Inma ground.

Inma is a traditional form of storytelling using the visual, verbal, and physical. It is how Anangu Tjukurpa (story connected to country / dreaming / myth / lore) have been passed down for over 60,000+ years from generation to generation.

  • Matthew Thorne

    Matthew Thorne (b. 1993, Adelaide) is a South Australian filmmaker and artist. His work uses film, photography, and re-enactment to explore contemporary Australian identity, spirituality, relationship to land, and masculinity. Matthew’s work has been shown at various festivals including receiving the Silver Bear Jury Prize at Berlinale, Documentary Australia Prize at Sydney Film Festival.

  • Derik Lynch

    Derik Lynch is an initiated Yankunytjatjara man born in Alice Springs in 1986. Derik has performed around Australia and the world including at the Southbank Theatre, London, Belvoir Street Theatre (Sydney Theatre Company), and most recently at the Sydney Opera House with DANCERITES (2019). Derik’s first film is Marungka tjalatjunu (Dipped in black), which he co-directed and co-wrote.
