Americana

This competition takes a critical look at a strong Latin America that, despite the absence of institutional support, makes cinematic miracles with very few resources.

Aferrado is one such film, an animated work that transcends its medium to make us feel the colourful and chaotic atmosphere of Mexico City’s bustling streets. Buscando un burro stands in contrast, transporting us to a remote village in the Venezuelan Andes, where the code of silence reigns after two young men are imprisoned for filming a donkey. Then, by the perilous waters of the Colombian Amazon, Lanawaru highlights the sacred rituals through which the Indigenous communities of Puerto Caimán sustain a balanced relationship with nature. Based on a true story, the tragic romance of Olivia recalls the Bolivian people’s violent demonstrations against the country’s dictatorship in the 1970s. On a lighter note, Servicio necrológico para usted is an engaging portrait of a Cuban couple who run a village funeral parlour from their home. Our journey ends in Panama, with the wry humour of Panadrillo, which tells the bizarre tale of a woman whose husband mutates into a talking crocodile. It all adds up to a rich overview of a regional cinema that approaches the Latin south’s current issues and historical legacies with humour and conviction.
