Carte Blanche Thess International Short Film Festival

Greece has experienced a harsh economic, political and social crisis over the last decade. Even though the country is very slowly coming back from the brink of collapse, the detrimental social effects that have been felt are anything but minor. A 60% unemployment rate in 2013, two-thirds of health and education budgets slashed and thousands of jobs lost… All things considered, one can easily guess the fate of budgets reserved for culture!

Throughout this selection, it will be interesting to see how this crisis affects Greek filmmakers’ imagination and creativity. Are their stories marred by this wave of austerity? Do they use the medium to denounce, to mark the era or to invent a beautiful world that allows one to escape current preoccupations? That’s what we’ll discover in this program from a festival that celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2016.
