Tourists from Québec and Russia are no longer alone in filming Fidel’s Island. Since
1959, Cubans have been producing renowned national films, despite the ever-present
rigid political context, bans and self-censorship; Cuban film is still on the rise.
Fifty-five years after the revolution, dive into the heart of a culture where the regard
is often critical toward its young filmmakers. In collaboration with the Muestra Joven,
Young Directors Film Festival of the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and
Industry (ICAIC) in Havana, REGARD offers a selection of the new generation’s best
Cuban shorts. In this program, you’ll discover films without artifice, free of censorship
and full of emotion. A succession that is sensitive to both to national history and the
transformation of film today.
The Muestra Joven Festival is recognized for supporting films that are daring and
experimental. Their representative, Mijail Rodriguez, will brave the Québec winter
and be among our distinguished guests for this special event.
“Cuba si!” as Chris Marker would say.
