A Tribute To Philippe Belley

Death is upsetting in that it totally disrupts our reference points and certainties. We have lost a close friend who was as dear to us as he was to his entire community – the one he created and to which he dedicated much of his time, over the 39 too-short years of his life. After working as a radio host and director, he made his first films and REGARD was quick to recognise the essence of this extraordinary human being. In 2011, he founded the production company Les films de La Baie, which survives today thanks to his partner in crime, Stéphanie Gagné, and the entire team they put together. In 2014, Philippe made a name for himself at REGARD and other festivals in Quebec with his film La Reine du Sébaste et son Royaume. In 2018, he won a Numix prize for his web series L'usine et ma vilaine mémoire de 9 ans. This screened retrospective, with commentary by some of his collaborators, is a celebration and shows a man passionate about life. A man as endearing as the characters in his films, he knew how to touch the hearts of people and, thanks to his passion for documentaries, to find his way in life.
