The RFC Generation
“Film records time“
This idea is one that drives a new generation of filmmakers in Madagascar and even Africa as a whole. Most current Malagasy productions do not benefit from public funding but nonetheless, around sixty short films and one or two features are produced each year. A bona fide network of professionals came together and they help each other make films.
I often speak of urgent cinema when talking about contemporary African cinema. Indeed, after 13 years of festival life, I feel this urgency more than ever; this new generation’s necessity and determination to take ownership of the medium of film. It’s also reflected in these filmmakers’ chosen themes. There’s a belief that every film that is produced serves a purpose, which is something that applies to every film in this Carte blanche.
