South Korea Panorama

The advent of democracy in South Korea (1993) allowed several young filmmakers in exile for their studies or to escape the Dark Age to return to their country. They then crafted a film style peppered with Western influences while anchoring their stories at the heart of Korean culture and traditions.

This 3rd New Wave cinema is both fascinating and satisfying. Renowned for depicting violence in its simplest form, free of artifice, it also exhibits a lot of this new generation’s hope, power and lust for life, albeit in more subtle ways.

This selection produced in collaboration with Antitube will be one of the best surprises of REGARD’s 21st edition program.

Welcome to a cinema where codes and points of reference no longer exist.
