Panorama: Brasilian Cinema's Comeback

BRAZILIAN CINEMA’S COMEBACK

In the 60’s, Brazilian Cinema NOVO radiated through an exalted nationalist fervour, much like Quebec’s cinema at the time. Glauber Rocha’s slogan could still apply; one camera, one idea.

Its current comeback is due to a renewed interest in local audiences for Brazilian cinema and its success overseas. It also suggests the return of free speech to creators who had long been censured. In an overview of Brazil’s production, discover the preoccupations, tendencies and influences of today’s filmmakers. Films with striking realism centered on everyday life, from youth to wisdom. Films reflecting common folk above all, marked by ever present music and tender irony.

The screening will be followed by a conference with filmmakers Nara Normande (Sem Coraçao), Fauston Da Silva (Meu amigo Nietzsche) and Bruno Jorge (Contratempo), accompanied by the director of the Rio de Janeiro’s Festival Curta Cinema, Ailton Franco Junior.

REGARD – Internationale Short Films Festival, in collaboration with Antitube, will screen Panorama Brazilian cinema’s comeback at the Musée de la civilisation (85, rue Dalhousie), next April 9th .
